The Making of Romeo and Juliet

Fond memories for me to say the least! Moments with Franco, Leonard & company while we prepared and eventually started shooting R&J. I was always aware there was a camera filming our every move and here is a little evidence. I was not imagining it! I hope you enjoy it.

Love and light! Olivia

    Dear Olivia,

One of my freshmen English students at Lower Richland High School (Cola. SC), Auston, arrived at my class yesterday afternoon so excited- he showed me your response to his comments on your website. How wonderful!!! I used your blog as a teaching moment by pulling up your webpage on the Smartboard and reading the exchange between you and Auston. My class was thrilled to see a direct connection between their reading of Shakespeare, the Zeffirelli production, and your perfect portrayal of Juliet. We also looked at your photos depicting your career and the material relating to Romeo & Juliet. It made for a great lesson!

Sidebar- when my daughter Madeline tried out for her school’s production of the modern treatment/twist on the timeless play, Allison William’s Drop Dead,Juliet! I told her about your impeccable performance as Juliet and advised her to channel that combination of energy, genuineness, grace, and beauty into her audition. The result: she earned the role!!!

Thank you for a performance that remains the quintessential Juliet and for responding to my student’s comments. He will never forget it, neither will I!

Olivia, being an 18 year old girl myself I have been enchanted by you and Leonard’s portrayal of Romeo and Juliet for years. I am currently in college studying to become an English teacher, and I am so excited to show my future class your work. I remember seeing it for the first time in 9th grade English, and how I thought “she is the most beautiful girl I have ever seen!” about you! I just want to sincerely thank you for making me fall in love with Shakespeare and for the countless times I’ve watched the film and had a good cry 🙂 best wishes! -Sam

Sorry for the double post. I live a bit isolated in AustraIia and I am not sure if posts get through. But I just noticed that your birthday is the same as my dear sister Lizzie who passed away last year on may12. She was a selfless community mural artist. She was always the first to tear up when we were all 9kids watching a movie. I vividly remember her doing so with Romeo and Juliet. Thanks for your reply.

Olivia, ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘Brother Sun, Sister moon’ are the two movies that have stayed most with me over my life. Zefferelli’s really nailed some sort of revival romantic genre all on his own. As an artist I am often inspired by the joy, and innocense of these films, especially in the actual acting and how much the actors enjoyed their roles and learning experiences. Of course thanks to Shakespeare as well and the original Romeo and Juliet somewhere, who I understand actually existed. Thank you.

Hi Olivia. With all the wonderful comments I would like to add that I saw R & J when I was 17 (I am 63 now) and it became one of my all time favorites. A few years ago when my son was in high school he asked if I had seen any movies about R & J, of course, I showed him the best one ever made, he loved it and he got to watch again a few weeks later in school, because the English teacher,of my generation, said it was the best movie ever about R & J. My son tells me to keep my day job, when I start quoting, “Where be these enemies?”. God bless you and we have enjoyed your down through the years, you certainly aren’t a one hit wonder.

Hello. I’m in the 9th grade and we just finished Romeo & Juliet today. And let me say you are an amazing actress. Most of the people in the class did not pay attention to much, except the fighting and scenes with nudity and of course they were immature but I actually listened you and Leonard portrayed r&j so well.

    Love, Auston

I would love an autograph if that’s not much to ask.

    Dear Olivia,
On Monday I was awarded a PhD in Education.
I realise the inspiration for my work came from seeing Romeo and Juliet as part of a sixth form Enghsh class. I was 17. I ever more was torn between the study of biology and the arts, My doctoral research was about combining them and teaching them.
Thank you once again for your and Leonard’s inspiring and life changing performance.

    love and light to you

I was on leave from US Navy boot camp back in 1968 when I saw this stunning movie. It still brings tears to my eyes after all these years.

Now, my 14 y.o. daughter is reading the part of Juliet in her English class and I am lucky to have the blu-ray version of the movie to allow her to feel the language and the mood that you so ably brought to the part.

    Thank you so much!
